Control of saltcedar
must be weighed against the loss of nesting habitat for the endangered
southwestern
willow flycatcher.
The most effective
way to control saltcedar is to use multiple tactics. For example,
herbicides can painted on cut stems to prevent re-growth.
Mechanical control
includes plowing, bulldozing, digging or pulling young trees, and
cutting stems as close to the ground as possible. Re-vegetation
may be necessary to prevent saltcedar from re-invading cleared areas.
Herbicides are
effective in controlling saltcedar, but care must be exercised around
aquatic ecosystems.
Two insects,
mealy bugs and
leaf beetles are being researched
as possible biological control agents of saltcedar.
