Cultural control

Poisons are often used to control rats in large areas or where infestation is heavy. The most commonly used poison is warfarin, which causes rats to bleed to death internally. The poison is relatively slow-acting and often requires the rat to feed multiple times.

Baited rat poisons can be dangerous because they have broad non-target effects.

Biological control using dogs and cats has historically been important for rat control, leading to such breeds as the rat terrier. However, when rats infest a structure, dogs and cats do not usually provide effective control.
