Herbicides are very effective for controlling established musk thistle
infestations, if applied in the rosette stage and before bolted
plants begin to bloom. Musk thistle can produce viable seed if herbicides
are applied after buds are formed.
Plants should be actively growing when herbicides are applied, such
as during the early spring. Late fall treatments are also effective.
Several chemicals are approved for the control of musk thistle in
pastures, rangeland, and non-crop areas. Commonly used herbicides
include 2,4-D and Tordon® 22K (picloram). Roundup® (glyphosate)
can be used to treat isolated plants.
