The area infested
by gypsy moth is expanding at a rate of
13 miles per year. However,
unlike most insects, the adults do not contribute to the spread
of this pest.
Larval gypsy moths (caterpillars) are able to disperse by ballooning.
They crawl to the tip of a leaf, where the wind catches their long
hairs and carries them to another tree.
Gypsy moth egg masses are transported longer distances on vehicles
and firewood. A national effort is underway to slow
the spread of the gypsy moth through intensive monitoring and
treatment of isolated infestations.
