The
West Nile virus is making its presence felt in Nebraska
and in the whole of the United States. The first case of West Nile
virus in Nebraska was observed in a dead blue jay in northeast Lincoln
on June 28,2002.
West Nile encephalitis is an infection of the brain caused due to
interference with central nervous system by West Nile virus, a flavivirus
commonly found in Africa, West Asia, and Middle East.
Mosquitoes get infected when they feed on infected
birds.
The virus is located in the mosquito's salivary glands.
West Nile encephalitis does not get transmitted from person-to-person.
There is no vaccine against West Nile encephalitis.
